The New Zealand Film Commission is currently studying the detail of Australia’s latest attempt to lure Hollywood productions to the other side of the Tasman.
Earlier this month, Australia’s federal government announced a new, four-year A$140m (NZ$151m) pot of taxpayer funds aimed at ensuring their film industry “remained vibrant and competitive”.
What the announcement effectively means is that foreign productions shooting in Australia will receive a 30 per cent rebate on the money they spend there from July 1, rather than the current 16.5 per cent (which had been topped up on ad hoc basis). In comparison, the latest iteration of the New Zealand Screen Production Grant, which took effect on July 1 last year, offers a rebate of 20 per cent, with an extra 5 per cent rebate for those productions that can demonstrate “significant additional economic benefits to New Zealand.
